Curriculum vitae

Morten Kyng is professor of Pervasive Computing and director of the Centre for Pervasive Computing, www.pervasive.dk , a national research centre with headquarters at Katrinebjerg in Aarhus. He has a longstanding track record of research in participatory design, computer supported cooperative work and human-computer interaction.

Together with the late Kristen Nygaard from Norway and Pelle Ehn from Sweden Morten has since 1973 lead the development of the Scandinavian school of participatory design which has set the agenda for vast body of international research.

In recognition of this work Morten was in 2001, as the only European, appointed to the ACM CHI Academy for leadership in the field of computer-human interaction.

Most of his research has been done in cooperation with use-organizations and industry. He has participated in the development of several application prototypes in novel and emerging areas since the early 1980ies: computer supported cooperative work, hypermedia and pervasive computing. He is currently doing cross-disciplinary research on participatory design of pervasive computing applications, primarily in the health care sector.

Morten has published several articles and books, organized international conferences, served on university committees and governing bodies and is currently advisor to a venture capital company.

Jobs

From 1975 to 1995 Morten worked at the Computer Science Department at the University of Aarhus.

In 1996 he became the first managing director of The Danish National Centre for IT Research under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. The task was to bridge the gap between university research and industry, and - according to the official international evaluation - the centre did an excellent job.

In 1998 the Danish National Research Councils asked him to set up a national centre for multimedia research and in 1999 he was appointed director of the new IT University West, a collaboration between the Danish universities outside of Zealand. Within its first two years of operation IT University West developed more than 20 new educational programs.

In 2000 Morten was given the task of setting up a new centre for research in pervasive computing and he is still working as director of the Centre of Pervasive Computing.

In 2003 Morten returned to the University of Aarhus as professor of pervasive computing.

Since January 2004 Morten has been Project manager of the Integrated EU Project PALCOM, ist-palcom.org.
