Mandatory Projects

Each student must participate in the series of mandatory projects. Currently two projects are planned. The last project will be graded on the 13-scale and will be the final grade.

Project 1: NISC BAC Contig Assembly

To be handed in on Tuesday, April 26nd.

In this project we will mine the NISC Comparative Vertebrate Sequencing Project and NCBI for BAC contigs, which we will then assemble into longer sequences.

From these sequences we will, in the final project, construct multiple sequence alignments usable for comparative genomics.

Project 2: Distributed BLAST and Clustal W

To be handed in on July 1st.

In this project, we use the framework we developed for distributed computing to build a system for aligning the BAC clones from the previous project. We will build distributed BLAST and Clustal W services and use these to position clones on the human genome, and build multiple alignments of the clones, respectively.
