After having finished my Ph.D. Qualifying Exam in March (report avialiable here) I have updated the HyConExplorer/J2ME prototype. New features include:
- Improved interface
- Improved performance on the Nokia 6630 SmartPhone
- The prototype now uses an image proxy which converts and scales images in annotations on the server resulting in faster loading times
- First support for IBM’s J9 VM on PalmOS and PocketPC
Porting to MIDP on the PalmOS was relative easy. The prototype is tested on IBM’s J9 Java VM which is avaliable for PalmOS and PocketPC. A few changes had to be done e.g. adding support for pen based input on the map and creating the image proxy to ensure that graphics were all in png-format (the IBM implementation does not support jpeg :~ ) I have put up a page with screenshots of HyConExplorer/J2ME running on the Palm MIDP environment.
