Hewie, Dewie, Louie, and GUI - Commanding Robot Formations

The Interaction Lab

We have designed a GUI for the formation algorithm in which the user in an intuitive way can click-and-drag robot nodes to form almost any shape. When done, the user downloads the shape to a group of robots running our formation algorithm, and they establish the new formation. Currently the GUI is run in connection with a robot simulator.

Two short clips demonstrating the basic features of the GUI. (0.2 MB), (0.2 MB)
Clicking and dragging robot nodes into shape and using the 'quantize' function that adapts all angles to the closest multiple of a user-defined quant parameter. (0.3 MB)
Downloading new formations to the robots. (0.8 MB)

GUI animations of switches between formations. (1.2 MB)
How switches look in the simulator. (3.8 MB)

Example of recovery: when a robot looses sight of its friend, it starts looking around until it sees him again and then catches up. 3.3 MB)

We have written a paper that we are submitting for ICRA-02.
