Model for Measuring Alignment in University Courses

Thesis Defence

The thesis as defended at the Department of Computer Science, University of Aarhus, on December 9, 2008. A week before the defence, a question was specified, which was to be answered with a lecture held at the defence. After the lecture, the adviser and censor could ask further questions.

The question was specified in Danish, but I have given a translation of it below. The question references two sources, which for the sake of convenience have been made available here:

Measuring Constructive Alignment: An Alignment Metric to Guide Good Practice (paper)

Measuring Constructive Alignment: An Alignment Metric to Guide Good Practice (presentation)

Question

Based on your report, give a brief presentation of the main ideas in your thesis: motivation, problems, and main conclusions. Afterwards, give a put your model for measuring alignment in perspective and compare it to Tepper's metric for alignment, specifically the concepts of negative and positive alignment [1]. The perspective should focus on the overall differences and similarities between the models, criticism of the models, and any implications in regard to course planning; do not include a detailed account of the mathematical models used in Tepper's work.

The lecture is time-boxed to about 30 min.

After the lecture there will be 30 min. of discussion based on the the lecture and the thesis.

The question must be based on the paper [1], but note that the slides 15-24 in [2] give a significantly simpler example of the metric. [1] and [2] are attached to this mail and can also be found at
