Description
While the main focus on much of HCI research has been on situations where a user interacts with one specific set of physical and logical instruments, to achieve a particular task or purpose, we are currently faced with the challenge of understanding human-computer interaction as happening in multiple, more or less ad hoc, and even changing configurations of instruments. Human-computer interaction may migrate across devices; users may access the same applications from several different devices, which offer different interaction possibilities, and they may change between these, or apply a multitude of devices while interacting.
The workshop focuses on concepts for understanding such ubiquitous interaction, so as to design better interaction possibilities. Our claim is that the field is fundamentally lacking a vocabulary to describe, discuss and compare interaction beyond the level of one device-one application. We challenge HCI researchers to make their contribution by submitting a position paper to the workshop.
The themes include:
• context, in particular changing contexts of interaction
• activity-based interaction
• interaction patterns
• interaction and information migrating across devices
• changing configurations of interfaces in use
• analytical networks for ubiquitous interaction
