Computer graphics is a scientific discipline that combines several areas of the natural sciences, including applied mathematics and computer science, in the quest to create and manipulate images. The fundamental goals of computer graphics are to synthesize volumes, geometry, motion and images that are indistinguishable from real world phenomena, that are in accordance with some artistic style of expression or that convey information in a comprehensible way.
Scientific computing is the field concerned with developing and studying mathematical models and numerical techniques for simulation of large scale scientific problems on computers. Research in scientific computing encompasses many areas such as computational fluid dynamics that studies the flow of liquids and gasses, weather modeling that studies the dynamics of weather systems as well as computational physics, chemistry, biology and so on. Scientific computing is also important to computer graphics due to the physical simulation techniques used for physically based animation.
Physically based simulation of surfaces and fluids
Emphasis is on developing applied mathematics as well as efficient algorithms and data structures that have relevance in several of the basic natural sciences. The techniques are useful for creating convincing visual effects in various computer graphics applications.

Medical image computing and surgical simulation
The activities look for faster simulation of soft tissue deformation using GPU-based techniques, new visualization techniques for deformable models, medical image processing, volume rendering and suitable haptic interaction techniques.

Numerical analysis
The main areas are Numerical Linear Algebra and Numerical Solution of Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations.
Visual art
The goal is not to produce visual impressions close to real life but to use the techniques to create visual effects that cannot be produced by traditional materials like oil paint, plaster etc.
