MADALGO: Center for Massive Data Algorithmics

The Center for Massive Data Algorithmics, or the MADALGO center, is a
major new basic research center funded by the Danish National Research
Foundation (Danmarks Grundforskningsfond). The center is located at
DAIMI, but also includes researchers at Massachusetts Institute of
Technology in the US and at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics
in Germany.

The main objective of the center is to conduct fundamental research in
the area of design, analysis and implementation of algorithms and data
structures for processing massive data (interpreted broadly to cover
computations where data is large compared to the computational
resources), but initially the research focus of the center will mainly
be on so-called I/O-efficient, cache-oblivious and streaming
algorithms. Other important objectives include training of phd
students and post docs in a world-leading and international
environment, and being a catalyst for multidisciplinary research on
massive dataset issues in commercial and scientific applications.

In this talk we will discuss the motivations for the MADALGO center,
its objectives, the center team, as well as the research agenda and
the activities we hope will allow the center to reach its
objectives. The talk will almost coincide with the planned March 1
official start date of the center.
