It will be possible to visit Denmark's oldest and best preserved town Ribe and
its 800 year old Cathedral with both old mediaeval decorations and very
modern mosaics, frescoes and new stained-glass windows.
A few hundred meters from the Cathedral lies the Viking Museum (The Vikings
of Ribe). The museum shows the history of Ribe from the year 700 until 1700
and also offers a multimedia room and a new Adventure Hall where e.g. a market
place has been recreated in full size describing a day in the year 800.
In Odense there are museums to Hans Christian Andersen and Carl Nielsen, both
world-famous sons of Funen. In the Hans Christian Andersen Museum you can see
rare or unique editions of his works, confidential letters, personal
possessions, notes and draft versions of a number of his works etc.
Near by lies The Funen Art Gallery presenting the main trends of the history of
Danish art, stretching from the paintings of the early artist Jens Juel to
comtemporary Danish works by such artists as Asger Jorn, Richard Mortensen and
Robert Jacobsen.
Above the centre of Kolding stands the Castle of Koldinghus, the
earliest parts still standing date from the 15th century. Since then the castle
has been rebuilt several times and is today famous for its splendid weathered
buildings that span over five centuries containing the Castle Chapel, Great
Hall, Library etc.
In Kolding we also find one of the largest Danish museums of modern art outside
Copenhagen: The Trapholt Museum. The museum specializes in 20th century
Danish pictorial art and the collection includes works by distinguished Danish
artists such as Anna Ancher, Franciska Clausen, Richard Mortensen and Per
Kirkeby. Recently a new department for Danish designed furniture has
been opened.
