GNU Zip

The free GNU Zip package is a compression utility prevailing on most UNIX machines. It is very likely that GNU Zip is already installed on your system. The package contains two commands: gzip for compressing and gunzip for decompressing files. Typically files that have been compressed with gzip have the extention ".gz".
