Acrobat Reader Hints
A few simple but powerful hints for the Acrobat Reader novice.
General
- If you plan to browse multible PDF documents over a shorter period
of time, you might want to consider to avoid exiting the reader. Just
use Close from the File menu instead of Exit.
A new instance of the Reader checks to see if a Reader process is already running. If
so it just sends a message to the existing process to open the file, thus
skipping the initialisation stage (which takes some time).
- The Reader (UNIX) saves a history of previously opened documents. The
history is accessible from the File menu, and is thus a short
cut to open frequently visited documents.
Notes
- In some PDF documents you may find notes similar to the
coloured stick-on notes used for paper documents. In PDF documents the
notes are either open or closed. Open notes just shows a scrollable
window in the document. Closed notes look like document icons as you
know them from many window systems. You can toggle the notes between
being open and closed.
Bookmarks
- Bookmarks are very useful for efficient browsing. To activate select
the menu entry View->Bookmarks and Page
(or press the 2nd tool button in the toolbar below the menu bar).
- If you cannot read the bookmarks because the bookmarks window is too
narrow, you can extend it by dragging the small knob located at the lower
right part of the bookmarks window.
Text Search
- It is useful and fairly quick to use text search. You might want to
use text search when, e.g., you have found an interesting keyword in the
index, or just looking for a topic. Use Find from the Tools
menu.
