CPN Group at the University of Aarhus

The group has worked with Coloured Petri Nets (CP-nets or CPN) for more than 20 years, and the group is the world-leader with respect to the industrial application of high-level Petri Nets and their tools. The group works with all aspects of CP-nets, i.e., theoretical foundation, tool support, and large-scale practical applications.

The CPN group has developed two sets of computer tools supporting the use of CP-nets:
  • Design/CPN was developed in the late 80'ies and early 90'ies. Today it is used by 750 different organisations in 50 different countries, including 200 commercial enterprises.
  • CPN Tools is the next generation of tool support for Coloured Petri Nets. The first Beta-version was released in October 2001. Within the next year CPN Tools is expected to replace Design/CPN.
The work of the CPN group has been presented in a 3-volume textbook and 100 papers presented at different high-quality conferences and journals.

The CPN group has close contacts to the International Petri Net Community and we are responsible for the web pages and mailing list that act as information and communication fora for more than 1000 people in the community. The International Conference on Application and Theory of Petri nets has been organised in Aarhus in 1984, 1991 and 2000. The group is represented in the steering committee of the conference and in all the program committees.

Since 1998 the CPN group has organised its own annual Workshop and Tutorial on Practical Use of Coloured Petri Nets and the CPN Tools. This event attracts 50 participants from 10 different countries.
